Ardbeg Uigeadail Islay Single Malt Whisky 54.2% vol. 0.70l
Jim Murray gave this whisky 89 points.
Admittedly, “Uigeadail” (pronounced uhgedal) doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue – but this Islay Scotch makes up for it on the palate. A good dose of campfire and a hint of citrus fruits, as is typical for Ardbeg whiskies, combine with sweet fruits, peat, and earthy aromas.
Tasting Notes
Nose: intense smoky notes of a wood fire – dry, pure, with pepper, sherry, and a touch of tobacco.
Palate: brilliantly silky, firm, full-bodied, and salty body that clings to the palate, strong dry wood fire tones, seasoned with black pepper and caramel toffees.
Finish: hot-blooded, with alcoholic aroma and smoke in the long aftertaste.
Ardbeg Uigeadail: A Full-Bodied Peat Experience
The year of birth for Ardbeg Uigeadail was 2003. The age of this voluminous Islay whisky cannot be precisely determined – but the experienced whisky connoisseur should not be bothered by the fact that Ardbeg Uigeadail is a No-Age-Statement whisky. The pale-complexioned Islay gentleman still knows how to impress with his inner qualities! Ardbeg Uigeadail is bottled with 54.2% alcohol by volume, making it a fairly strong representative of the Scottish whisky world. Its smoky peat note is also strong. It wafts towards you as soon as the bottle is opened. But the fruity components, which Ardbeg Uigeadail owes to its sherry cask maturation, quickly join in. The majority of the whisky spends its maturation time in classic ex-bourbon casks, while ten percent are allowed to rest in aromatic Spanish sherry casks. Blackcurrants and raisins, as well as oak wood, walnut, pine needles, pepper, and winter-Christmas associations, can be found in Uigeadail’s complex profile. It is certainly advisable to open this popular, peaty-smoky whisky with a few drops of water. The taste profile becomes even more intense, and with a little practice and concentration, you can extract many more aromas from Ardbeg Uigeadail. This complex taste experience also impresses internationally:
- 2018: Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition
- 2017: Gold at the World Whisky Awards
- 2014: Gold at the World Whisky Awards
- 2009 and 2010: World Whisky of the Year in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible
Ardbeg Uigeadail: An Islay Classic for Almost Two Decades
The Ardbeg Distillery has been located on the south shore of the Hebridean island of Islay for two centuries. Initially operated as an illegal distillery, like so many Scottish distilleries towards the end of the 18th century, it was officially founded in 1815 and has been legally producing first-class whisky ever since. Ardbeg Uigeadail is just one of many bottlings from Ardbeg; the Islay distillery’s product range includes more than 30 different single malts and a few blends. The strong and complex Ardbeg Uigeadail has been part of the distillery’s core range for almost two decades. Incidentally, it was named after a lake located just a few kilometers from the distillery: Loch Uigeadail, from whose springs the Ardbeg Distillery draws some of its water.
