Ardbeg Ten 10 YO Islay Single Malt Whisky 46% vol. 0.70l
Jim Murray awarded this whisky 97 points.
Light in color, dark in aroma: The Ardbeg 10 YO Single Malt is an exceptionally typical Islay whisky with a strong peat and smoke note and the absolute classic in the distillery’s product range. Incredible 97 points from Jim Murray and gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2015, 2018, and 2019 speak for themselves.
Tasting Notes
Nose: a hint of tar with a crate full of apples and tropical fruits, surrounded by a maritime scent of seaweed with a breeze of salt water.
Palate: the full-bodied taste of a peat bonfire on the beach, while the wind blows inland from the sea, carrying a salty spray; accompanied by a pleasant sharpness of anise and black pepper on the edge of the tongue.
Finish: long, smoky, and peppery-dry farewell from the palate, accompanied by a hint of iodine.
Ardbeg 10: a prime example of typical Islay Scotch
Anyone who has had the good fortune to visit Islay will have fallen in love with the small, wild Scottish island at first sight. The ocean and its scent are omnipresent, stormy, salt-laden winds caress lush green meadows. The sea naturally has a significant influence on Islay malts. In the multi-award-winning Ardbeg 10, the soft water from Loch Uigeadail and very heavily peated malt have been combined into a true explosion of aromas. Stored in large-pored oak barrels on the shores of the sea, the Ardbeg 10 literally inhales the strong sea breeze and releases it only when the bottle is opened. The 10-year-old Single Malt is a sought-after Islay classic, appreciated by connoisseurs and Islay whisky novices alike, who want to get to know the aromatic world of the island and taste one of the typically smoky, peaty Islay malts that taste of sea air.
Ardbeg 10: the most famous bottling from Ardbeg
You can taste the origin of the Ardbeg 10, which is perhaps why it is so popular. It combines just about everything that one associates with the Hebridean island of Islay. The constant sea breeze, the salt-enriched air, the wide meadows and pastures with their wild herbs, the mountain regions with their rugged gray rocks and the splashing of the waves as they hit the coast. The Ardbeg 10 presents itself just as complex and harmonious, but in the typical Islay whisky style. Peat and smoke stand out dominantly, accompanied by citrus fruits and pears. The notes of dark chocolate and nuts, combined with the sharpness of pepper and anise, complete the taste profile of the ten-year-old Ardbeg.
The Ardbeg Distillery has been officially licensed as a whisky distillery since 1815. Like most Scottish distilleries, however, Ardbeg’s actual beginnings go much further back into the past. In the course of the 19th century, the distillery’s business developed very well, culminating in a good million liters of annual production around 1887. But a century later, less rosy times came. Between 1980 and 1997, the distillery was temporarily closed, but started its grand comeback shortly before the turn of the century.
