El Enemigo Gran Enemigo Gualtallary 2020
This wine can be cellared for up to 16 years. It is recommended to decant it for an hour before serving.
El Enemigo was established in 2009 by historian Adrianna Catena, the youngest daughter of renowned Argentine winemaker Nicolas Catena, and Alejandro Vigil, the chief winemaker at Catena Zapata. These two friends were inspired to create a wine label together that would celebrate both Argentina’s burgeoning winemaking culture and the rich viticultural heritage of Europe.
To craft this majestic Gran Enemigo cuvée, Alejandro draws upon his extensive winemaking expertise and sources top-quality grapes from a single vineyard in the esteemed Mendoza sub-region of Tupungato. The vineyard sits at the foot of the majestic Andes Mountains and is nourished by melted snow flowing down from the peaks. Located at an altitude of up to 1400 meters above sea level, this location is ideal for cultivating this premium Cabernet Franc, thanks to the sunny days with ample UV light and cooler nights that help preserve freshness.
The quality of this exceptional wine has already been recognized by Robert Parker, who awarded it a near-perfect score of 99 points. The grapes are meticulously harvested by hand during four passes through the vineyard to ensure optimal ripeness, followed by a long and slow fermentation and maceration process carried out in barrels. The end result is a powerful wine reminiscent of the finest Pomerols, with abundant notes of cassis, crushed wild berries, leather, and cigar box spice derived from barrel aging.
