Domäne Wachau Riesling Ried 1000-Eimer-Berg Federspiel 2023
A strikingly cool style, refreshing citrus fruit, and pronounced notes of pear and vineyard peach characterize this juicy and mellow single-vineyard Federspiel, which finishes delicately with a fine acidity.
The unique 1000-Eimer-Berg (1000-Bucket Mountain) is a prominent elevation in Spitz and forms the gateway to the Spitzer Graben to the north. Traditionally, 1,000 buckets of wine (one bucket corresponds to about 56 liters) were said to have been harvested from this mountain. The stone terraces on which the vines grow are oriented towards the southeast and are characterized by paragneiss and marble in the subsoil. The constant air circulation also contributes to the particularly intense, elegant Riesling fruit here. The wine’s lightness and dark spiciness represent the typical “Spitzer Kühle” (Spitz coolness).
Only through elaborate manual labor can the steep terraces of the 1000-Eimer-Berg vineyard be cultivated. The Domäne Wachau has two hectares of Riesling here. For the sophisticated single-vineyard Federspiel, the winery exclusively processes absolutely healthy grapes, which are pneumatically pressed and fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks under controlled conditions.
