The historic Chateau Purcari has earned a reputation for producing exceptional Bordeaux-style blends in a charming rural corner of southeastern Moldova, near the Black Sea. The estate’s history dates back to 1827 when Tsar Nicholas I issued a special decree establishing Purcari as the first official winery in the region.

However, the region’s connection with French winemaking traditions goes back even further. French settlers who arrived in the area recognized the similarities between the local terroir and their native Bordeaux, noting the rubidium-rich soils and the shared latitude. Their early experiments with Bordeaux grape varietals proved remarkably successful, and Chateau Purcari continues this legacy today, crafting excellent Bordeaux-style blends like this Rosu de Purcari.

This Bordeaux-inspired blend is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with a touch of Malbec, seamlessly combining French influences with a distinctive Moldovan character. The grapes are cultivated near the Black Sea, where the cooling influence helps to preserve their freshness and aromatic intensity. Traditional local vinification methods are employed, and the wine is then aged in French oak barrels for 18 months. This extended maturation period softens the tannins and harmonizes the different grape varietals, creating a powerful and age-worthy red wine with luscious dark fruit flavors and savory notes of woodsmoke, cedar, and toast derived from the oak aging.
