The historic Chateau Purcari traces its origins back to 1827, when the Emperor of Russia issued a decree designating the property as the first official winery in Bessarabia, the region now known as Moldova. In the 19th century, French settlers in the area recognized the striking similarities between the local terroir and their native Bordeaux. Both regions share the same latitude and possess rubidium-rich soils, which contribute to the characteristic purple hue of Bordeaux wines.

These settlers collaborated with the local monastery, which owned the vineyards, and began experimenting with Bordeaux grape varietals, which flourished in this environment. The exceptional quality of the terroir quickly became evident, and the winery soon began receiving accolades both within Bessarabia and internationally, including a gold medal for their Negru de Purcari at the 1878 Paris World Exhibition. More recently, this same wine was awarded another gold medal at the 2020 Decanter World Wine Awards.

This exceptional red wine is produced in limited quantities from estate-grown grapes, meticulously hand-picked to ensure optimal quality. Traditional local winemaking techniques are employed, and the young wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels. The result is a robust, full-bodied wine bursting with flavors of dark berries, plums, and cherries, complemented by sweet spice notes from the oak aging. It pairs beautifully with hearty red meat dishes.
