The prestigious history of Chateau Purcari began in 1827 when Emperor Nicholas I of Russia issued a special decree establishing the estate as the first official winery in Bessarabia, the region now known as Moldova. Situated just 30km from the Black Sea, the winery benefits from perfect conditions for producing high-quality wines. This was evident as early as 1847 when the estate’s Negru de Purcari wine won a gold medal at Bessarabia’s agricultural exhibition. A few decades later, this same wine received another gold medal at the Paris World Exhibition, placing it amongst France’s best Bordeaux wines.

Today, Purcari is once again receiving well-deserved recognition, earning impressive scores at the Decanter World Wine Awards, including a gold medal for their renowned Negru de Purcari. This exceptional red wine is crafted primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with the indigenous Saperavi and Rara Neagră grapes, which contribute complexity and intensity.

The grapes are meticulously hand-harvested at peak ripeness, and the winery employs traditional winemaking methods that have been practiced in the region for centuries. The young wine then matures in French oak barrels, allowing the tannins to soften and the different grape varietals to harmonize. The result is a rich and robust red wine brimming with dark fruit flavors, spice, and toasted oak notes, complemented by firm tannins and a lingering finish.
