Chateau Purcari Malbec de Purcari 2022 Moldova
This wine can be cellared for up to 5 years and enjoyed immediately without decanting.
Classic Bordeaux grape varietals such as Malbec, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc have been cultivated in southeastern Moldova for centuries. French settlers who arrived in the region noticed the striking similarities between the local terroir and their native Bordeaux and collaborated with local monks to experiment with these French grapes. This tradition has been carried on by Chateau Purcari, which was founded in 1827 by decree of Tsar Nicholas I.
The grapes for this delightful Merlot are carefully hand-picked to ensure optimal quality and then vinified using traditional local winemaking techniques. Before bottling, the young wine is aged in French oak barrels for 6 months. This process yields a wine with luscious aromas of blackberries and plums, complemented by delicate hints of violets. On the palate, it reveals a well-rounded medium body, firm tannins, and a velvety smooth texture.
Its approachable flavor profile makes this Merlot an excellent choice to share with family and friends over casual dinners. While it can be enjoyed now, it can also be cellared for a few more years to allow its flavors to further develop. Although not yet widely known outside of its native Moldova, Chateau Purcari is an emerging star on the European wine scene, having garnered numerous medals at the Decanter World Wine Awards in 2019 and 2020.
